Born from the first Monastir kendo club in 2010 and formally constituted under the Tunisian Judo Federation in 2017, the Tunisian Kendo League brings together every kendo and iaido dojo in the country. We are a full member of the International Kendo Federation (FIK) and affiliated to the European Kendo Federation (EKF).
History
Tunisia's first kendo dojo is founded in Monastir, with François Briouze (5 Dan) leading the practice. This single club is the seed from which every subsequent dojo and the future Tunisian Kendo League will grow.
The Association Sportive de Kendo (ASK) is formally created in Tunis. ASK organises the first international kendo training camp held on Tunisian soil, opening the country to visiting senseis and foreign practitioners.
ASK organises a second international training camp, consolidating Tunisia as a regular host for visiting senseis and confirming the country's place on the international kendo map.
The Carthage Kendo Club is created, becoming the second affiliated dojo in the country. Tunisia holds its first kendo grading examinations, allowing local practitioners to validate their level without travelling abroad.
Tunisia takes part for the first time in the European Kendo Championships, held in Skopje. The Shinzen association is created to formalise relations with sister federations and structure the international development of Tunisian kendo.
Kendo is introduced under the Tunisian Judo Federation and the Tunisian Kendo League is created. ASK is the first club affiliated. Tunisia becomes a full member of the International Kendo Federation. 2nd national selection for the European Championships in Budapest. The fourth kendo club, Kendo Police, is created.
Tunisia takes part for the first time in the World Kendo Championships, held in South Korea. A Tunisian delegation also attends the Yokohama international training camp, deepening the league's ties with the homeland of kendo.
Tunisia competes in the European Kendo Championships in Belgrade, the league's third EKC participation since affiliation, fielding both men's and women's selections.
Ken No Michi, a dojo dedicated to iaido, becomes affiliated to the Tunisian Kendo League, broadening the league's scope beyond kendo to encompass the practice of drawing the sword.
The Tunisian Kendo League takes part in the Focus Japon cultural event, presenting kendo to the Tunisian public and reinforcing ties with the Japanese cultural community in Tunisia.
Kendo features in the TICAD Games programme alongside the Tokyo International Conference on African Development. Tunisia competes in the European Kendo Championships in Frankfurt, and the league hosts its first FABA Cup with the support of the Fondation Abdelwaheb Ben Ayed.
Tunisia takes part in the European Kendo Championships in Beauvais. Three new dojos affiliate to the league in the same year — Ariana Kendo, Ben Arous Kendo and the Tunis University Kendo Club — bringing the country's club count to eight.
Ambassador OSUGA presents the Japanese Minister of Foreign Affairs Award to the Tunisian Kendo League in the presence of H.E. Sadok Mourali, Minister of Youth and Sports — recognising the league's contribution to friendship between Tunisia and Japan.
The league hosts two international training camps — the Livolsi Camp with Pascal and Mirial Livolsi senseis, and the Grausem Camp with Grausem sensei — and closes the year with the Ambassador's Cup 2024 under the patronage of the Embassy of Japan.
Tunisia competes at the European Kendo Championships in Leiden, takes part in kendo demonstrations at the OSAKA Expo and the TICAD Games, and the league hosts the inaugural Tunis Open.
Ayoub Khanfir is awarded the Fighting Spirit prize at the European Kendo Championships in Leiden — the first medal ever won by Tunisia at the EKC.
